I have been hearing more and more how people are starting book clubs around my new book, Parenting in the Screen Age.

This sparked our idea of launching something we came up with called “Chapter Clubs” where people form (or join) a book club all about one chapter in the book. In this way, a club would choose a chapter that is particularly relevant to them at this moment in time — whether that’s parenting social media, mental health, learning online, or a host of other topics.

Committing to just one chapter can be a good way to make a discussion happen with other parents.  Of course, it can be a full book club, but just starting with the idea of a Chapter Club can entice people who feel overcommitted or Zoom-fatigued.

In support of Chapter Clubs, I will be hosting Wednesday online chapter discussions, the first Wednesday of every month. These discussions will be led by me, along with guest experts, and online participants, like yourself. Our first one launches Wednesday, December 2nd. at 6 pm PST.

To get a link to join our  Chapter Discussions, click here.

What I hear from parents all the time is that they feel so alone when it comes to trying to manage screen time.

We hope that “Chapter Clubs” can be a way to bring parents together to uncover, device, and share strategies — whether your child is 5 or 18.

Picking one area around screen time that particularly impacts your circle of your kid’s friends/ parents is a way to open doors and get parents working together, rather than in silos. Perhaps your child is playing video games a lot these days, you could invite the other families with whom he is playing games to discuss the Video Game chapter.

Here are the book chapters in the book that can be the focus of a “Chapter Club” (And keep in mind that even if your club is just with one or two other parents that’s great)

  • Social Media
  • Video Games
  • Mental Health
  • Sleep
  • Essential Preparation for Screen-Related Conversations
  • Contracts and Family Rules
  • Challenging Conversations
  • Screens in Schools and Homework
  • Fostering Human Bonds
  • Cultivating Creativity, Insight, and Focus

Here are the dates to join me for three different online discussions. If you click here we will send you a link of how you join the discussion.  To get a link to join our Wednesday Chapter Discussions, click here.

  1. Social Media - Weds, December 2nd at 6 pm, PST
  2. Video Games - Weds, January 6th at 6 pm, PST
  3. Mental Health - Weds, February 3rd at 6 pm, PST

Here is the synopsis of the book, Parenting in the Screen Age that you can share with other parents who might want to join in a Chapter Club:

Does every conversation with your child or teen about screen time blow up into a fight? Or maybe you avoid bringing up the topic but silently harbor worry and frustration.  How can you better understand what you’re up against — and most importantly, ensure the healthiest screen time possible?

In Parenting in the Screen Age, award-winning filmmaker, and mental health advocate Dr. Delaney Ruston distills more than a decade of communications research into a definitive guide for today’s parents. Packed with evidence-based insights on screen time from researchers, input from kids and teens, and solutions drawn from Dr. Ruston’s own messy parenting struggles, this guide shows you how to start--and sustain--productive family talks about technology. You’ll learn how to:

  • Bring up screen time without making your child or teen defensive
  • Talk through difficult issues like online social cruelty, sexting, and mental health
  • Engage your child in creating boundaries around Netflix, video gaming, and social media
  • Have screen time limits that actually work--with less of the sneaking or arguing

During the COVID pandemic or after, this book will help you lead your child to become more tech-wise and life balanced — empowering them to build a healthier relationship with our digital world, now and into their future.
